One crewman has been killed and at least four injured after a ship carrying petroleum products caught fire in port in Sharjah, according to the organisation Human at Sea.

The ship was in the port of Al Hamriya in Sharjah when the fire broke out at 5.30am local time, according to the organisation.

It took the coast guard, Sharjah Civil Defence and Al Hamriyah Port’s own emergency response units the entire day to extinguish the blaze, with the fire brought under control by the afternoon.

Varying reports indicate that up to 16 crew members had to be evacuated from the ship, resulting in four being taken to hospital due to their injuries.
