Randy Richards, FreightScan's executive vice president of sales and service, provides a profile of CargoVizion, an entirely unique and cost-effective product that is set to corner the market in cargo scanning.

Can you give me a brief description of what FreightScan does?
We really have two types of product. The first is the dimensioning system, and we have two products within that realm. The FS100 is a stationary mount and is placed anywhere that freight pauses to automatically capture the dimensions of the shipment.

In today’s environment, with cutbacks and time constraints, the manual process of dimming the freight is unfortunately falling by the wayside and a lot of revenue that’s going through the warehouses is not currently being captured.

The other model is the FL1000 forklift model, for freight that is constantly on the move. Right now, it’s a bit restricted in the height dimensions that it can capture, but we’re currently working with the camera manufacturers to see if we can offer a wider range.

What’s the second type of product you are working on?
The second project is CargoVizion, a security threat detection system, which is currently being tested by the US government’s Transport Security Administration (TSA). It hasn’t been approved as of yet, but it’s a bit different, to say the least.

With x-rays, you have to interpret what the picture looks like, but what CargoVizion does is actually identify the molecular make-up or composition of any chosen substance. For example, we can tell the machine that salt represents a threat. So you download the molecular composition of salt into the machine; it then detects that in a shipment and issues the operator with a threat alert.

Now, if you input the composition of something like TNT or C4, you can then start to see just how impressive this solution is. Not only that, but CargoVizion will also tell you where that threat is – for example, in the right lower corner of the pallet.

Is this technology unique?
Absolutely.

Have you had much interest from regional companies?
Definitely – I know, for example, that we’ve had some conversations with the Dubai police department, with regard to preventing the illegal trade in narcotics. We also think this particular application is useful for perishables as well, as x-rays can be very damaging to perishables for instance.

Also, the lumber industry buys by the density and we can help with that. So we’re focusing on the cargo industry, but there are innumerable other applications as well. I see an application on the borders as well, so we can really modify it to any specific need that the client wants.
