Emirates sees 24% growth on Indian routes

Dubai airline Emirates has registered a 24 percent growth in passengers on its Indian routes for the year to September 30, an official has said.

At a time when the global aviation industry is witnessing big drops in customers, Emirates said it expected to maintain the level of growth rate until the end of the current financial year, according to Majid Al Mualla, vice-president, Commercial Operations, West Asia and Indian Ocean.

He told The Hindu newspaper in India that the largest Arab carrier was planning to add 12 flights to its Indian operation by the beginning on next month.

Emirates currently operates 172 flights a week from Dubai to 10 destinations in India with Mumbai (35 flights), New Delhi (25) and Hyderabad (21) the most frequent.

Majid said this number would increase to a total of 184 "following good patronage" on the routes.

The proposed 12 new services will be introduced on the routes to Kolkatta (5 per week), New Delhi (3), Calicut (2) and Chennai and Tiruvananthapuram (one each).

Majid told the paper the airline was always open to considering adding new destinations in India to its current list, but had no immediate plans to do so.
