As the industry gears up for day one of the Dubai Airshow on November 15, HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum has said that the expected high attendance figures show that Dubai continues to play an important role in global aviation.
Some 890 companies from 47 countries are exhibiting at the show, an increase over the previous event in 2007 which attracted 850 exhibitors.
In addition, up to 50,000 visitors are expected during the five-day event.
“Some people have said that the Dubai Airshow wouldn’t be well attended this year, but exhibitors clearly still want to come to Dubai,” said Emirates Airline chairman Sheikh Ahmed, during a press conference.
“We saw 19.5% growth in passenger traffic in September compared to last year at Dubai airport, and Emirates Airline is reporting positive numbers in terms of forward bookings for December and January.”
Sheikh Ahmed added that airlines’ ticket prices were stabilising, despite yields remaining low.
“Yields are low, but airlines are pushing prices up to counteract the shortfall. Last year the airlines panicked and pushed prices too low.”
The chairman confirmed that the airline has maintained its order with Airbus for 58 A380s, but went on to say that delivery dates had been pushed back.
“As I understand, Emirates will take delivery of more A380s in December or January and we are considering taking on planes into our fleet that are not being used by other airlines.”
