Doha to open multi-billion dollar port in 2014

The first phase of a multi-billion dollar plan to build a new port in Doha will be up and running by November 2014, a senior project official has announced.

Toufic Oueida, executive director, said the need for new facilities would become increasingly apparent if Qatar continues to grow at its present rate.

The second and third phases of the port will include the addition of two new major container terminals, he said in comments published by Gulf Times on Wednesday.

Oueida added that the new port would also house the navy facility, the Emiri yacht and the coastguard facilities.

He made his comments while addressing delegates at a conference in Doha on Tuesday, adding: “The aim of this project is to create a world-class deep water commercial port which provides all the facilities the current port provides, as well as having the option for dealing with further demands in the future."

Oueida said access and traffic problems meant the current Doha port had "limitations and challenges".

The first stage of construction, which has not yet begun, will involve the excavation of the basin and the entrance to the port, followed by the dredging of the channels.
