Shoppers in Miami received a shock at the weekend when an 18-foot panel from an Atlas Air cargo plane fell from the sky onto a shopping mall’s car park.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the 68kg canoe-shaped fairing detached from the wing of a Boeing 747 cargo plane, which was travelling from Santiago in Chile to Miami airport.
It landed in front of Dillard’s department store at the Miami International Mall, although no injuries were reported and the plane landed safely shortly afterwards, stated the Miami Herald.
"Atlas Air confirms that a fiberglass fairing from one of its freighter aircraft, Registration No. N429MC, dislodged from the aircraft upon approach into Miami International Airport. The flight was en route from Santiago, Chile, to Miami. The fairing came to rest in a parking lot of a nearby shopping mall. The plane landed safely at MIA and we understand no one was injured and that there was no property damage," stated a press release from Atlas Air.
"Atlas is grateful that no one was injured and is investigating the matter further. Atlas is also cooperating with the appropriate authorities in their review of this matter. Atlas takes this matter very seriously and will be conducting a thorough investigation," it continued.
