Suvarnabhumi Airport, located 25km east of Bangkok, was created to replace Bangkok International Airport, which suffered from severe overcrowding with limited space available for expansion.
Initial operations began in September 2006, with the airport now serving as a main hub for Thai Airways International, Bangkok Airways, Orient Thai Airlines, Thai AirAsia and a focus city for Cathay Pacific, China Airlines, EVA Air, Air India, Druk Air, Indian Airlines and SriLankan Airlines.
The airport is able to handle six million tonnes of freight a year and includes a cargo terminal, measuring 190,000m², in addition to a freight express facility, which contains a warehouse, office building and 12 aircraft stands.
In total, Suvarnabhumi Airport handled 1.17 million tonnes in 2008, an decrease of 3.8% compared to the previous year.
