The United Arab Emirates celebrated its highest number of air traffic movements ever in 2011, with the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) reporting a total of 683,389 movements for the year, an increase of 7.6 percent in comparison to 2010 levels. The daily average also highlights a continued boom in UAE aviation over the past decade, from a humble 736 movements in 2001 to a record 1900 movements last year. 8. Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International Airport (3400 air traffic movements in 2011)
Although a new entrant in the UAE airport community, traffic at Dubai World Central's Al Maktoum International Airport continued to improve over the course of 2011, with a dedicated focus on cargo operations. While air traffic movements of 153 were reported by the GCAA in January, the figure peaked at 531 in October, marking an impressive growth rate of 347 percent in total.
