Kuwait’s United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) received its eighth A13 (13,500 TEU) container vessel yesterday.
The vessel was part of a US$1.5 billion order for nine A13s placed with the Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard, based in South Korea, in 2008.
The vessel was named Al Qibla at a ceremony where Othman Ibrahim Al-Issa, chairman of UASC’s board of directors, said: “Al Qibla takes her name after a city in my homeland in Kuwait, and her name carries a special spiritual meaning as well - in the Arabic language it means the direction towards which we turn for prayer”.
